SONGS OF REMEMBRANCE, I

Wedding Song

Nina Assimakopoulos, 2004

Oil and Mixed Media on Canvas, 45x32

This piece uses as its point of entry the choral work Village Wedding (1991)  by British composer John Taverner (b.1944).  Village Wedding sets a poem by the great Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos (1884-1951).  Between lines of the poem, Taverner inserts a refrain whose text "Oh Isaiah, dance for joy, for the Virgin is with child" is from the Orthodox marriage ceremony.  This song on canvas expresses solemn joy and mystery through color, texture, composition, and visual symbolism.  Songs of Remembrance I, Wedding Song is an alchemical work inviting the participant to experience varying levels of meaning and understanding through gateways of vision and sound.  (Recording: track one)
